Still launches new ‘powerhouse’ RX 20 and foresees rising market share

Still recently introduced the almost completely renewed electric truck RX 20. Logistics Inside Europe was present and inquired about the highlights. Check the video for more info.

With the launch of the distinctive silver-orange RX 20, Still previously “hit the mark” with operating companies and operators of electric forklifts back in 2005. Over 80,000 units have been produced since this time. The Hamburg intralogistics specialist has now completely redesigned its bestseller, made significant improvements regarding compactness, ergonomics, performance and precision and has equipped it with smart assistance systems.

13 Truck types

The new RX 20 family consists of a total of 13 truck types and is designed for loads of 1.4 to 2 t with a load centre of gravity of 500 mm. The smart all-round trucks are ideally suited for combined indoor and outdoor use and quick and safe transportation of goods with a maximum driving speed of 20 km/h, even over longer distances. The RX 20 also proves its capabilities when stacking pallets at heights of up to 5,900 mm.
The efficient powerhouse was designed for a variety of applications and is the first choice wherever high handling performance and availability are key in tough 2 or 3-shift operations. Due to the extremely compact design, it is of particular interest for applications where small working aisle widths are important due to narrow travel paths. Here, the improvements can be found in the detail:

Power and performance

The truck has a completely new drive module. Integrated in this are two encapsulated maintenance-free three-phase traction motors with active cooling, as well as a new generation of converters. This not only provides strong and reliable performance, but also maximum climbing capability on ramps. Depending on the rated capacity, the agile truck can drive on ramp slopes or inclined drives with a gradient of up to 20% at maximum load.
To ensure that the truck always provides the performance demanded by the respective application, the customer can switch between optimal energy efficiency or high handling performance at the press of a button. Speed, acceleration, as well as electric braking when changing drive direction can be adjusted in each driving program.

High agility and compactness

The new RX 20 is considerably more compact than its predecessors.

The extremely agile RX 20-14C and RX 20-16C are an ideal choice for customers who require particularly compact trucks with capacities of 1.4 or 1.6 tons. The agility of the trucks is based on an extra short truck frame which results in a small working aisle width while providing a large battery capacity (625Ah) at the same time.
A combination swing axle improves the working aisle widths for the 4-wheel trucks. Compared to their predecessors, the working aisle width of the 3-wheel trucks has been reduced by up to 29 mm and that of the 4-wheel trucks by up to 171 mm.
The new RX 20 trucks are already suitable for use in containers at their standard height of 2,035 mm. For use with particularly low gate clearances or in freight cars, the truck is also available with an overhead guard height of only 1,949 mm.

New battery concept

The 48-volt electric forklifts with standard chassis can now accommodate batteries with 625 Ah in circuit A- or B-.

A new battery concept ensures large range and availability. The 48-volt electric forklifts with standard chassis can now accommodate batteries with 625 Ah in circuit A- or B-, so the operating company can continue to use existing battery pools and exploit the advantages of the respective battery depending on the application profile. Still has achieved this level of battery variance due to its dual battery tray which is unique on the market. This tray means that the customer is ideally equipped for the future, as new battery technologies such as Lithium-ion batteries can be used. Like in predecessor models, a key success factor for the RX 20 is the quick and easy lateral battery exchange using a pallet truck.

Optimized view

The mast has also been optimized. Powerful lifting has been combined with optimal visibility. Rigid and torsion-resistant mast profiles ensure safe and quick load handling, even with heavy loads with higher residual capacities. The new masts are characterized by a slender nested profile package as well as the use of C-profiles in the outside mast. The lift cylinders are positioned behind the profiles. This provides the driver with a clear view, both through the mast as well as past it on the sides. The overhead guard was also designed for an optimum circumferential view, to allow quick and safe storage and removal even in high rack levels.

Increased ergonomics

Increased ergonomics ensure fatigue-free and productive work. The workplace of the RX 20 offers the driver substantial freedom of movement. The height of the foot-well is lowered by approximately 60 mm, and the driver’s workplace is lower by 50 mm.
The cabin height in the interior has been increased by 16 mm and provides plenty of headroom even for tall drivers. A large handle, a non-skid rubber mat and a non-slip step edge increase safety when accessing and exiting the cab. The foot-well is very generous and Still has also paid attention to providing a lot of free space around the pedals. Service technicians are also pleased about the increased foot-well. For maintenance, they only have to loosen one metal sheet, which already gives them complete access to the parts to be serviced.
Still has also made considerable improvements to the noise level of the trucks. In particular, it was possible to significantly reduce the noise of the lifting and steering pumps.

Smart assistance systems

Precision increases safety and performance: STILL EASY Control, a newly developed display and control unit acts as a safety and communication centre. The fully graphical colour display with automatic brightness control not only provides information to the driver about all truck parameters, such as driving speed, tilt angle, battery status, energy consumption etc but thanks to the menu-guided control and favourites buttons, it also enables the driver to directly access driving and lift programs, the battery remaining run time display and many other functions. A drive direction indicator on the display increases handling performance and safety.
Numerous assistance functions, including a display of the stability status on the screen, as well as a speed reduction when the fork carriage is raised not only improve safety but also contribute to precise load handling, which further increases the handling performance. Familiar assistant functions such as Curve Speed Control, which automatically adjusts the curve speed to the steering angle, are also used in the RX 20.
